Canine Respiratory Disease
CALL USCurrent Information on the possible canine respiratory disease outbreak
Recently there have been multiple reports in the media about a surge in canine respiratory symptoms in many parts of the country. At this time, it is not known whether this is one new disease, several new diseases in different areas, or simply a real or perceived increase in the usual diseases. There have also been reports that this outbreak is causing more serious disease and deaths. Right now, the consensus in the veterinary community is that it is likely just an increase in the usual diseases or just a lot of attention to the normal fluctuations of these contagious diseases. Some experts are also suggesting that the increased popularity of short nosed or brachycephalic dogs, such as French bulldogs, are the reason for the increased severity of the cases. These dogs have much less protection in their respiratory system and are much more prone to pneumonia and other serious complications than the long-nosed breeds.
What should you do? Since no one knows yet what we are dealing with we recommend precautions that include the following:
1) Avoid exposing your dog to dogs with an unknown health or vaccination history.
2) If any of your dogs are exhibiting respiratory symptoms such as coughing or nasal discharge do not bring any of them around other dogs.
3) If you need to board your dog, be sure that they are protected with a kennel cough vaccine that includes Parainfluenza protection.
4) If your dog is boarding or traveling out of state and will be exposed to other dogs, we recommend the canine influenza series of 2 vaccines.
We will be sure to keep this site updated with any new information and please feel free to call with any questions about this topic.
